Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court Deeds 1625 - 1675
Ref 1549: Obligation : 13 January 1674 by David Charters, merchant burgess of New Galloway, as principal, and William Charters in Balmaghie, his brother, as cautioner, to repay to Hosea Shaw in Gait's the sum of £50 Scots at Candlemas 1674 with £10 penalty and the annual rent. Dated 16 November 1673 witness Homer Gordone, customer in New Galloway and John Muir there.
Ref 1698: Bond 8 July 1674 by James McMillane in Craignel to Hosea Shaw in Gaitt for £40 Scots payable 2 August 1674 with £8 penalty and annualrent from Candlemas last. At New Galloway 18 February 1674 witnesses Robert Gordoune of Gardvarie and James Chalmer of Wattersyd.
Ref 2077: Obligation 27 April 1675 by James Shaw in Ballmangane to pay the foresaid Robert Walker the sum of £24 Scots in equal portions at Martinmas and WhitSunday with £10 penalty in annual rent from the date hereof. At Kirkcudbright
3 July 1674 witnesses Thomas Sprot burgess there, George Welsh and John Chapman officers there and Alexander Bryce writer there.
Ref 261: Obligation 22 June 1666 by William Schaw and Jane Sprott his wife at the Myle of Senick to repay to Robert McClellan of Balmangane the sum of £90 Scots at Martinmas next with £20 of penalty and the annualrent. At Kirkcudbright 7 August 1663 witness Robert McClellan of Balmagahine and Thomas Sprot son of the deceased Thomas Sprot in High Borg. James Hunter notary write in deed.

At the Kirk of Twyim 1 May 1675 witness James Gordoun of Cambiltoun and William Thomson and James McConchie there. James Bell burgess of Kirkcudbright is notary.
Ref 2186 : Bond 5 July 1693 by James Corson of Eightshillinland to “ Oassie” (Horsea) Shaw in Geait for £24 payable at Martinmas 1692 with annual rent from WhitSunday last and £4 penalty. At Killochie 10 June 1692 witness James Cannan of Killochie and Robert Cannan his lawful son.
Ref 2579: Bond 18 July 1696 by George Sinklar in Upper Laggon to Robert Davidson present baillie of New Galloway for 100 merks payable at WhitSunday 1695 with £20 of penalty and annualrent from the date hereof. At New Galloway 28 November 1694 witneess Samuel and William Shaw , lawful sons to Hosea Shaw , Gate. Written by John Chalmers merchant in New Galloway.

Shaw usually a wood but Jamieson's explanation better suits the ground at this place where the Blackwater of Dee spreads wide over glaciated rock making much noise.
